5 Garage Organizing Tips

What does your garage look like right now? If that question sent a shudder down your spine, it’s time to buck up and clean it out. Now is the perfect time to spend an afternoon shaking the cobwebs out and getting organized. Here are a few helpful garage organizing tips that will leave you feeling fresh and organized for the year to come.

Separate the wheat from the chaff.

Let’s face it, there’s a lot of stuff in your garage, but you don’t need all of it. Remove everything from where it is and sort it into designated areas for keeping, donating or throwing out. Be ruthless. You will never use that old rake and it doesn’t have feelings anyway! If you need to rent a dumpster then rent one, it’ll make it easier to throw stuff out, and quite honestly it’s fun chucking things away!

Safety First.

As always, safety should be your number one priority. If you’ve been storing anything hazardous like propane, move it outdoors. Also, make sure your garage has its own (not expired) fire extinguisher. Though you never expect a fire, it’s easier to be prepared. You could also create a safety section in your garage in an effort to stay organized and keep all of your safety equipment together and easily accessible. Another thing to check is that your garage door has a laser system that will auto-stop the door if it’s about to close on a child or pet.

Revamp your storage options.

Out of all the garage organizing tips out there this one will end up being the most useful. If you’ve had things haphazardly strewn about in crumbling cardboard boxes, it’s time to improve your storage options. Shelving units, peg boards, plastic bins, and hooks on the wall are all good options, depending on your needs. A major key to maintaining your clean garage is to have enough storage options so you aren’t forced to store anything on the floor. Building shelves can be quick and fun. If you are a labeler, that comes in hand in the garage too.

Make it make sense.

Group items together by use and season. Make the items you use the most the most accessible. And group items that are used together in the same area. So it would make sense to put your yard waste bags near the mower, the fertilizer near the hose, etc. It sounds so simple, but it truly makes a huge difference!

Squeeze in a little luxury.

After you’ve successfully cleaned out your garage, it probably feels twice as big as it did before. If that feeling translates into actual space, why not add a small work table and bench for the occasional DIY project? There are pricier options, but you don’t have to break the bank to make a suitable workstation to help you with all your home projects. You’d be surprised at how fun it is to hang out in your garage with your friends. Whether you're sitting out on your driveway projecting a movie on the garage door with a fire going in your driveway, or playing ping pong and watching the football game inside of your garage. You’ll be surprised how often you can use it once it’s clean and ready to show off!
